The MODEL-ITU members have volunteered to offer basic ICT skills training to fellow students who are very eager to acquire basic ICT skills so as not to be left belong by the fast changing and multifaceted information society. Perhaps it would be intriguing to mention that some university students may lack the basic computer skills abut this is the reality on the ground.
The training based on the trainees’ convenient time takes place between Monday and Friday 9am-4pm at Science Complex, LAB 5.

According to Mr. Collins Nyanchio of the e-learning, students who join the university from rural schools lack the skills hence the initiative to ensure that all students are computer literate.

Though MODEL-ITU saw it necessary to assist as volunteers, certain underlying benefits to the trainers were pointed out by Mr. Nyanchio who is also in charge of Computer literacy and basis ICT skills like; gaining of confidence in public speech and improved communication skills, possibility of recommendation for the trainers and interaction with the universality technicians and experts that will enable the trainers grasp the latest development in the industry and also get to have practical bits of the hardware and soft wares.

From February 4, 2009, the MODEL-ITU volunteers have been actively involved in this noble venture that not only offers service to humanity but also a serve to entrench the deep rooted student camaraderie world over. In Kenya, it is almost a taboo for a university student to see a colleague; a comrade, in some kind of problem and fail either to lend a helping hand or alert the people with inert solidarity.

This is the basis of our new project meant to advance our PILLAR FOUR, which aims at: Bridging the Digital Divide and ICT Awareness: Model-ITU strongly supports the efforts aimed at bridging the digital divide in readiness for the pre and post eminent ICT renaissance in Kenya that aims at creating ICT Awareness.

During the familiarity joint meeting with the representative of the KU e-learning directorate, Mr. Collins Nyanchio on February 3, 2009, a working arrangement was made based on the volunteer trainers’ free time. In total, 13 volunteers have registered in the imitative with more expected to join later.
The MODEL-ITU Volunteers who are mainly students studying ICT related courses train on the introduction to computers, Microsoft Office, and the internet and email. The other area of focus is instruction on how to use the MOODLE (Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment), an open source soft ware that has been developed by the university to allow for e-learning through a resultant virtual class room.

Through the MOODLE which is hosted by the university’s server http://soma.ku.ac.ke, the students are shown how to log in and access notes, assignments and interact with their respective lecturers online.

We encourage more volunteers, including non members and even those outside Kenya to support this project by doing whatever little one can to help bridge the digital divide in pursuit of millennium development goals
